Top 7 Job Interview Mistakes

interview mistakes

Appearing Uninterested

You should be attentive not only with your physical appearance but intellectually also. Taking actively part in a conversation, sitting up straight and being kind to the receptionist all these things are counted when you appear somewhere for interview process. Also make sure you are not interrupting the interviewer with your query. Save it till the interviewer doesn’t complete his part of speech.

Take Good Time before answering the question

Interviewer wants to understand your knowledge in the short span of time so you need to think before you speak. Many candidates jump to the first thing they think of because they feel like they need to respond at the earliest. And blurting out anything that comes out first in your mind is not always a good option.

Bad Mouth about Previous Employers

Interviewer may ask you the reason of leaving the previous job and this particular type of questioning is designed not to just learn more about you and your professional history but also to understand how you will characterize their company in the near future. If you will just go on complaining about the previous organization it immediately sends a red flag about you being unprofessional and lacking company loyalty. For best results in order to express the specific details about your feelings towards the organization be candid but respectful.

Using Your Phone

Use of phone in the whole interview process is not a good option. Even if there is a large gap between the two rounds of interview, I would recommend to go-through the resume instead of using phone and chatting. It is advisable to keep your phone on silent mode or switch it off to avoid distractions, be focused and give 100% throughout the interview process.

Dressing Inappropriately

Your first impression before the interviewer is your dress so be aware of what you are wearing in your interview. Your dress and accessories might say something about you. Your interview date is presentation of your personality, intellectuality as well as verbal and non-verbal part of speech. So you need to be thoughtful about the attire you are wearing for the interview process.

Talking Little or in Excess

Interviewers are human only and their attention is likely to get wane as you speak. Every interviewer wants an appropriate answer of their questions without any elaboration. If you are speaking for 90 sec without interruption it is a sign that the interviewer is barely listening to you. I would recommend to say a direct “no” to question whose answers you are not aware of instead of taking the discussion to the other point.

Making weakness seem positive

In many interviews candidates prefer to express their weaknesses in a way that it seems to be positive. No interviewer is impressed with such answers because they have probably heard the same particular answer hundred times. To stand yourself out from the rest of the crowd mention a skill that you wish to improve upon and describe what you are doing to enhance your skill in this area. Interviewers are not bothered about your weaknesses they just want to understand how tactfully you can handle such questions.
